The history of Golden Sands began in 1956, when the government of the People's Republic of Bulgaria decided to build a new modern seaside resort that would attract foreign tourists. The choice fell on the unique location between Varna and Cape Kaliakra – with a 3.5 km long beach of fine golden sand located in a relic forest. In 1957, the first three hotels („Astoria“, „Sea Star“, „Pearl“) opened – the beginning of the largest tourist construction in socialist Bulgaria. The architecture of that era – with characteristic Balkan modernism – still defines the image of the resort today.

In the 1970s and 80s, Golden Sands became a major currency destination for Bulgaria – tourists from Germany, England, Scandinavia, and the USSR visited it. An aquapark, golf clubs, sports facilities, nightclubs, and luxury hotels were built there. After 1989, the resort underwent privatization and modernization – new 4* and 5* hotels were built, and tourist services were expanded. In 2002, the resort received the international Blue Flag quality certificate – an eco-certificate for the cleanliness of the beach and water.
