Location and distances
The history of Euxinograd began in 1882, when Prince Alexander I of Battenberg purchased the „Sandrovo“ estate (named after the nearby small monastery of „St Demetrius“). Between 1888 and 1891, Prince Ferdinand I commissioned the construction of Euxinograd Palace – inspired by the French château of Saint-Cloud near Paris. The architect Victor Rumpelmayer designed it in the French Renaissance style, with staircases, terraces and fountains facing the sea. In 1893, the palace became the summer residence of the royal family, whilst the gardens were designed by the Swiss botanist Édouard André.

Planted in 1891 with French grape varieties brought from Burgundy and Bordeaux, they continue to produce some of the finest Bulgarian wines to this day. The relict forest surrounding the palace is a protected natural area featuring plants that have existed in the region for millennia – one of the few places along the Black Sea coast with such vegetation.
Today, the palace remains state-owned and serves as the Prime Minister’s official residence, but the area around Euxinograd is developing into an upmarket residential area.
