From a Turkish wine-growing village to a prestigious neighbourhood in Varna – a centuries-old history
Neighbourhood Vinica It takes its name from the region’s centuries-old wine-growing tradition – „vinnitsa“ means ‘vineyard’ in Old Bulgarian. Situated in the north-eastern part of Varna, the neighbourhood combines its centuries-old rural heritage with active contemporary development as a prestigious residential and investment area. In 1971, the former village of Vinitsa was officially incorporated into the city of Varna, whilst retaining its distinctive rural charm, natural surroundings and authentic atmosphere. The history of Vinitsa is deeply rooted in the past. The first written records of the settlement date back to the 14th–15th centuries, during the Ottoman rule, when it was known as „Uch-Dere“ – a Turkish name meaning „three valleys“ (a reference to the characteristic terrain of the area). The inhabitants are mainly engaged in viticulture, olive growing and agriculture. The region’s renowned wine-making traditions gave rise to its present-day Bulgarian name – „Vinitsa“. During the 19th century, the village retained its mixed ethnic character – Turks, Greeks, Bulgarians and Armenians lived here.
