The coastal district named after Khan Asparuh – the founder of Bulgaria
Neighbourhood Asparuhovo It is named after the legendary Khan Asparuh – the founder of the First Bulgarian Kingdom in 681 AD. Located in the southern part of Varna, beyond the impressive Asparuh Bridge, the neighborhood combines rich history, the longest beach in the city (over 5 km of fine sand) and the dynamic development of a modern seaside area. According to legend, it was precisely on these lands that Khan Asparuh crossed with his pra-Bulgarians before founding the Bulgarian state. The name of the neighborhood is given in honor of Khan Asparuh – the first Bulgarian ruler who in 681 defeated the Byzantine army and founded Danube Bulgaria. Before receiving its current name, the area was known as „Beyond the Channel“ or „Chelopech“ because of its location south of the Varna Bay. Archaeological findings in the area indicate settlement dating back to antiquity – Roman artifacts, medieval fortifications, and remains of an early Bulgarian settlement have been discovered here.
