The history of Kazashko began in 1907, when a group of Russian Cossacks of the Nekrasov clan – descendants of the military ataman Ignat Nekrasov, who had fled persecution by Tsar Peter I in 1708 – – found refuge in Bulgaria. After centuries of wandering through Turkey, the Caucasus and the Balkans, they settled near Lake Varna, on land donated to them by the Bulgarian state. Attracted by natural conditions similar to those of the Kuban (their native region), they revived their traditional way of life – fishing, craftsmanship and an autonomous community with church services in Old Slavonic.
